Zhou Maiyou was born in Chongqing, China in 1936. He followed his father to Shanghai, China in the 1940s, then studied pencil sketching and oil painting with an exiled Jewish painter. In the 1950s, Zhou joined the army. While in the army, he became a cultural instructor and learned about the making of art. In 1958, Zhou published lyric poems and his oil paintings in People’s Literature magazine. In the 1960s, he entered Minzu University of China to pursue advanced studies, followed by a trip to Tibet. Since 2000, he has resided in the suburbs of Beijing, China to write poetry and paint.
